After 8 months of conversations with the volleyball community in Anchorage, we’ve decided to start a club: Legacy Academy.

 

All of these things we are going to do and even more. Our motto is this: We’re not just building a boys volleyball program; we’re building Alaska’s next leaders. We’ve seen so much in the way of our youth declining in their character: how to handle their emotions, and losing a vision for their lives at young ages with increases in mental health challenges (depression specifically) and suicide attempts.

 

This being said, the way we run our program is to start each practice with a short message about character (3 minutes) then we go train and develop skills based on these three pillars: Honor. Integrity. Mastery. As a former collegiate volleyball player, It’s important to me as well that these boys become incredible players as well! Maintaining a FUN atmosphere while not losing the intensity of developing into HIGH CALIBER volleyball players is vital for this program and a HUGE part of its DNA.

 

I have seen the way that volleyball has allowed my son to channel his intense emotions during this age range and how simple lessons on character go such a long way. My experience as a professor of communication and a director of Emotional Recovery (learning to identify your core emotions and healthy ways to process those emotions) has given me a great launching pad to do this within the lives of youth, college and adults alike.

 

This club will compete locally and for those that would like to travel, we’ll provide that option. It is non-profit and we want to make it available to as many as possible.

 

My hope is that you will be able to support this program by helping me get the word out to the Mears Middle School family as well as anyone in the volleyball community as we kick off our program this November 9th, 16th and 23rd. I’d love to talk more with you at some point about this and am hoping to be able to see many boys attend this volleyball clinic!
